Repost: Grief and Grace-What I Need From Friends and Family

You cannot possibly know that scented soap takes me back to my son’s apartment in an instant.

You weren’t there when I cleaned it for the last time, boxed up the contents under the sink and wiped the beautiful, greasy hand prints off the shower wall.  He had worked on a friend’s car that night, jumped in to clean up and was off.

He never made it home.

So when I come out of the room red-eyed, teary and quiet, please don’t look at me like I’m a freak.

  1. I’m not ready to clean all the handmarks off the woodwork yet, you know, the ones a boy leaves as he swings around a corner, or where he always grabbed the doorframe as he left his room, or balanced himself to put on/take off his shoes. I hear your heart on yet another one of the little trials we go through when someone suddenly is gone.😞

    1. I have archways between my foyer and living room and kitchen. The boys used to jump and slap the top whenever they passed. Handprints everywhere. Those marks are still there. I have no idea if any are Dom’s but I like to think so. Keep them, mama, keep them. ❤️

  2. Yesterday I heard the three songs we played at Travis’s funeral. The first two made me so sad. The third one made me smile and brought back a lot of fun memories. You see, the third song was “The Battle of New Orleans”. Travis loved that song and knew all the words before he was four. When we played it at the funeral everyone sang along. Even then it made me chuckle. I am thankful for the fun memories linked to that song. I hope that everyone has something like to make them smile when remembering their child.

    1. Oh, my! I knew that song too before I was four! I’m so thankful that remembering both the song and your son gave you a smile. Yes, there are many things that make my heart smile as well as make it sad. I’m thankful for every single one. ❤
